A fantastic opportunity now exists to join a global engineering business who design, manufacture and service systems and components for the world's leading aircraft, vehicle and machinery manufacturers.
Established more than 250 years ago and operating in more than 30 countries, my client is looking for an Automated Welding Systems Lead to be based at their site in Bristol.
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape the future of the aerospace industry by leading and contributing to very innovative research projects within the company's Global Technology team. This role requires a candidate with a strong background in hardware and software integration for robotic systems, and good knowledge of friction stir welding and derivative friction stir processes.

Job Description:

Create and explore world leading automated welding technology and product concepts
Provide technical expertise and sound technical judgement in automated welding systems and mature technology in accordance with the company's Technology Readiness Process
Support the team with well- justified planning and budgeting of automated welding developments
Engage with operations teams globally to understand opportunities for technology driven change, and requirements for future products
Support technology development by providing insights on products, the state of the art, key partners and supporting competitor analysis
Sustain existing and create new relationships with customers and partners, including academia
Attend conferences and events to share company activities/ news and encourage the next generation of engineers via mentoring/outreach

Travel Requirements:

Travel to customer and partner sites in the UK (expected 1-2 times per month, usually a day trip)
Occasional travel to global sites and customer/ partner sites (typically 2-4 times per year)

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential:
Strong, accredited undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, automotive engineering, physics or similar.
Specialist expertise in automated welding systems design and integration - using knowledge of hardware and software to build/modify systems to meet a set of requirements
Experience leveraging/driving the supply chain, partners and customers to bring about a refined/optimal system solution balancing requirements and performance
Good understanding of the practicalities of welding systems design and integration in industrial environments
Good knowledge of friction stir welding processes
Experience troubleshooting and system robustness testing e.g. identifying, investigating and repairing system faults/sources of variation
Knowledge/experience of embedding smart system capabilities into automated welding equipment. For example, the creation of customable HMI/GUI interfaces, and algorithm programming to enable intelligent sensing and close loop control, programming embedded software and programmable logic control
A strong self-starter capable of accepting a vision/goal and taking the initiative to deliver
A team-worker with a flexible working approach
Experience of planning and managing complex activities e.g. design of experiments, benchmarking, etc.
Good communication skills including verbal, written, preparing and giving presentations
Good standard of technical authorship e.g. experience of technical reports or publications.
General understanding of considerations throughout the product lifecycle i.e. material selection, design, manufacture, testing, repair/disposal/recycling/re-manufacturing.

Desirable:
Postgraduate degree in an engineering or equivalent qualification in automation, manufacturing systems (robotics) and welding (Friction Stir Welding - FSW) related engineering discipline.
Developing welding procedures and weld/welding qualifications (WPS, WPQR) according to ISO25239 and ISO18785, and understanding weld assessments (metallurgy, mechanical testing, NDT) and weld performance.
Background knowledge of a diverse range of processes, for example: welding, fabrication, bonding, machining, inspection, assembly and automation techniques
Knowledge of aerospace structures across OEMs and the supply chain
