Job Title: Instrumentation Engineer

Location: Milton Park, Abingdon

Salary Range: Competitive, depending on experience

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent (37.5 hours per week)

The Role:

They are on target to delivering the program and gateways for ST40. In order to do this several key instruments have now become operational and new instruments are coming on-line to be delivered.

Reporting to the Machine Instrumentation Project Manager the Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible for the seamless implementation of Machine instruments on ST40 through its operational lifetime and progressing for future machines. The ideal candidate will possess time and resource management, attentional to detail, be highly motivated, flexible and adaptable with a safety-first attitude.

Key Responsibilities:

The instrumentation engineer will take ownership of maintaining, operating and documenting various tokamak systems as they mature. This will require:

  • Working cross functionally to identify key tasks for system improvements, commissioning, servicing and calibration. Sequence the implementation within the wider project plan.
  • Determine project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards; completing technical studies; preparing cost estimates.
  • Preparing project status reports by collecting, analysing, and summarizing information and trends; recommending actions.
  • Create comprehensive system documentation, including: FMEAs, validation plans, risk assessments, user manuals, cable schedules, schematic & detailed drawings.
  • Ensure instrumentation documents are complete, current and appropriately stored.
  • Integrate as a key member of the operational team during experimental programmes present in the control room and on-hand to support for fault diagnosis and repair.
  • Work within an engineering change and work permit system.
  • Ensure best utilisation of resources including technician staff & equipment.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations.

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through the company's Occupational Health Service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:

  • Working at heights
  • Driving on Company business
  • Working with Ionising Radiation

The Candidate:

Essential:

  • Engineering HND/Degree qualified with an electrical bias
  • Experience managing electrical/mechanical engineering projects ideally within an installation environment
  • Experience with process improvement
  • Confident reading and interpreting electrical drawings
  • High level user of Microsoft office
  • Broad based engineering experience

Desirable:

  • Design and draughting in AutoCAD, SolidEdge Electrical or similar
  • Familiarity with labview
  • Familiarity with fibre optic networks
  • Experience with electrical noise management and reduction
