Nonstop Recruitment is recruiting for an R&D Formulation Chemist to join a Paints manufacturing company based in Limburg Netherlands, on a full-time, permanent basis.

The successful Formulation Chemist will report to the Laboratory Manager and will join the small development team. The company have a number of sites throughout the world and supply a range of coatings & paints to various industry sectors. This role will be based in the decorative paints division at the company's site in Maastricht. A degree qualified, experienced formulator with colour matching experience would suit this role.

Further responsibilities of this R&D Formulation Chemist will be:

  • Development and testing of decorative paints products
  • Formulation and colour matching of new products to meet customer requirement and producing trial samples to a high level of quality
  • Evaluation of new and alternative raw materials
  • Carry out full assessment of products during all stages of development, exercising knowledge, judgement and making decisions on whether a product meets requirements
  • Assist production in rapidly resolving production based issues
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with customers and suppliers to satisfy technical enquiries
  • Record all development work results in an orderly manner, so that full results and tracking can be ensured
  • Maintain reflective work practice, highlighting when and how to improve the development process or quality systems


As an R&D Chemist, you will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent in science - essential.
  • Proven industrial experience of colour matching and formulating in other coatings or polymer based industry - essential requirement.
  • Formulation and development experience of e.g. coatings, inks, paints, polymers etc. - essential
  • Experience in powder coatings preferred but not essential
  • Experienced with the use of colour computers for match prediction and colour difference measurements and interpretation
  • Experience with some analytical techniques such as DSC, TGA, IR would also be useful however please note this is not an analytical role
  • Excellent mathematical skills. Able to understand technical product information for raw materials and finished goods to determine how best to use them and what is acceptable in terms of product performance. Develop a general knowledge of powder coating formulation practices
  • Demonstrates good hands-on practical skills for operation of various processing, application and testing equipment
  • Able to explain technical issues
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma for design techniques would be useful
  • Able to manage own workload and prioritise conflicting demands whilst working under pressure to get the job done, all with an energetic attitude and with minimum supervision.
