Senior Civil Engineer

As part of a team of Engineers and Inspectors, the Senior Engineer provides an important role in the Asset Management, works delivery and supports the implementation of the asset strategy.

The role support the decisions on asset investment priorities which are driven by a risk management approach. The person will be an experienced engineer with excellent knowledge of the waterways' structures.

Role Responsibilities
* Manage a small team of up to 8 engineers, technicians & Inspectors

* Asset investment prioritisation up to £250k

* Asset strategy and prioritisation to control up to £50k of risks

* Supporting the management of significant infrastructure risk through the delivery of an integrated asset management system to improve the condition, safety and performance of waterway structures, fixed equipment, water resources, natural habitats, historic sites & objects (collectively termed "waterway assets").

* Management of a small team of length inspectors and/or Engineers and Technicians who will monitor changes to the infrastructure which is gathered monthly.

* Design and Specify Engineering solutions and where required, act as Principal Designer or Designer for works, (in accordance with CDM2015)

* Accountable for area programme of asset inspections, assess outputs
from inspections, make recommendations on ranking and prioritisation, then forwarding to the appropriate expert, accounting for risks, time, resources, heritage, environment & safety.

* Responsible for engaging and briefing Principal Engineers, relevent stakeholders and offering specialists advice, when risks require greater consideration.

* Define the maintenance, repair and renewal works (through WIP's) for delivery by the Trust's teams and contractors, taking account of, all statutory, technical, operational and customer requirements.

* Ensuring that data / information for all waterway assets is consistently maintained in accordance with prescribed standards, by competent staff and is available to meet the Trust's needs.

* Work alongside other teams to create an efficient customer service response, taking responsiblity for allocated tasks within a local area, whilst maintaining flexibility, to work across waterway boundaries.

* Engage with local customer service team and the Trust's customers to create positive relationships with all professions across the local AM team, to support infrastructure enquiries.

* Provide support technical support to the Trust's internal functions, contractors, Direct Services, Volunteers, Third Party Works, Planning and Externally Funded Works, agreeing standards and specifications

* Where required, provide temporary works designs to support works delivered by the Trust's Direct Services.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

* Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional qualification (ICE).

* Membership of relevant professional body at an appropriate level e.g. MICE.

* Professional qualification in a relevant technical discipline, such as Degree or HND in Civil Engineering.

* Demonstrate proven experience of inspecting / delivering engineering activities.

* Proven experience in assessing infrastructure risk.

* Knowledge and understanding of historic infrastructure, prefebly in the water environment

* Demonstrable experience in cross-functional working delivering performance across range of functions

* Able to negotiate with internal and external contacts

* Able to provide a good standard of written communication and proven ability to present technical data

* Continuous Professional Development.

* Good understanding of the Trust's Health and Safety requirements

* Lead by example, ensure your team take responsibility for the safety of colleagues, volunteers, themselves and customers.

* Comply with Canal & River Trust's Health & Safety policy and defined standards. Investigate and report incidents, accidents and near misses. Ensure safe use of appropriate equipment, prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements ensuring contents are understood and acted upon.
