Commercial Underwriter (Permanent)

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Commercial Underwriter to join the team in Watford, just a few minutes’ walk from Watford Junction Station.

Commercial Underwriter Responsibilities:

Joining the team, you will be responsible for assessing new Commercial, Bridging & Buy to let loan applications as submitted through various distribution channels including introducers & existing customer further advances. You will also:

• Complete referrals on lending criteria and the suitability of products prior to application.
• Act upon and fulfil automated underwriting decisions and to complete manual underwriting checks and ensure loan applications are accurately assessed.
• Work with introducers, both by phone, email and in person through external site visits.
• Make lending decisions within a pre-approved mandate.
• Conduct verification checks of ID, employment and property security within the documented processes.
• Work in accordance with relevant suitability and affordability guidelines, and to raise any necessary issues of concern to line management.
• Be actively involved in internal and external facing training, including the provision of support for the externally facing introducer application portal.
• Complete various incoming and outgoing client and 3rd party contact.
• Complete work within agreed qualitative and quantitative service standards, with a customer service focus.
• Meet pre-set role objectives including a variety of individual, team and department performance measures.
• Follow documented best practice processes through all work undertaken.
• To meet all pertinent regulatory requirements, understand and fully adhere to both your own responsibility and commitment as an individual and also the Company’s to ensure fully compliant activity.

The ideal Commercial Underwriter.

• Good standard of secondary education with at least C-grades in Maths and English together with higher levels of education.
• Excellent communication, listening and rapport building skills.
• Previous experience of Secured loan underwriting, preferably with a Commercial, Bridging or Buy to let background.
• An effective manager of a caseload of work.
• A diligent individual with excellent organisation and attention to detail.
• Excellent customer service skills along with a good telephone manner.
• Strong awareness of the financial services industry including compliance and FCA regulation.
• An ability to build strong working relationships and is an effective team player.
