Yester Estate Walled Gardens is East Lothian's newest rural events and weddings venue, set in the ancient walled gardens at Yester, Gifford.

The Role

Yester Estate is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic hands on Gardener to maintain and further develop the various gardens on a beautiful family run private estate, set within 500 acres of woodland, farmland and policy ground.

Reporting to the estate manager and estate owners on a regular basis, the gardener will be part of small gardening team who will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and development of the existing walled gardens and lawns to event standard and to maintain and enhance a gorgeous private garden for the family to enjoy.

Key Requirements:

• Hands on year-round garden maintenance and enhancement development
• Care of herbaceous and shrub borders Kitchen Garden, cut flowerbeds and fruit trees
• Propagation, greenhouse and nursery bed management
• Management and improvement, including a croquet lawn
• Garden machinery maintenance
• Garden Design and implementation
• Lawn Care

Be a part of a small team of gardeners and seasonal staff Ensuring garden team adhere to the estate Health & Safety policy.

The Candidate:

• Previous relevant experience, including at least 3 years gardening experience on a private estate/household
• Excellent horticultural and plant knowledge and plant husbandry
• Experience in boarder and garden design including implementation
• Ability to competently manage a small team, being able to work both independently and as part of a wider estate team
• Ability and desire to work outdoors in all weathers and to engage in physically demanding work
• Flexible approach to work, being able to help out on the wider estate where necessary and occasional weekend work in the lead up to events
• Experience in garden machinery is desirable
• Chainsaw licensePA1 and PA6
• First Aid at Work Training
• Experience in machine/vehicle maintenance
• Experience in driving quad bikes/heavy machinery/tractors and attachments
